Southampton Fantasy Premier League Preview 2020/21

Ralph Hasenhüttl improved his team from 16th to 11th last season and I see them improving further this season to the top half of the table. Danny Ings was very unlucky not to win the golden boot, he scored 22 goals only one behind Jamie Vardy. Southampton have dropped off over the last few seasons but let’s hope we see them back in the top half. Southampton scored 51 goals conceding 60 goals. They kept 9 clean sheets and had Angus Gunn in goal keeping 2 clean sheets while Alex McCarthy kept 7 clean sheets. We should see Alex McCarthy be Southampton’s Number 1 between the sticks. 

To go with Danny Ings’ 22 goals he scored 198 points in Fantasy Premier League. Another 3 Saints scored over 100 points, they were: James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Redmond and Alex McCarthy. Four players all tied for 4 assists each. 

Southampton’s opening 5 games are:

Crystal Palace (A)

Tottenham (H)

Burnley (A)

West Brom (H)

Chelsea (A)

Southampton finished off last season very well with only losing 2-0 to Arsenal from the remaining 9 games. To start this season they do have 3 winnable games against Palace, Burnley and West Brom plus they could pull of a draw or even a win against the Chelsea and Tottenham. They should keep one or two cleansheets plus score goals in at least 3 of the 5 games. 

Goalkeeper:

Alex McCarthy (4.5): He became the number one goalkeeper for Southampton from matchday 11 till the end of the season, we should also see him start as the number one keeper just ahead of Angus Gunn. He recorded 79 saves and kept 7 clean sheets scoring 104 points. For a 4.5m player he is value and can sit on your bench and can rotate through when your starting keeper has a hard rating matchup. Currently in 18.7% of teams, expect that to hit at least 20% before the season starts.

Defenders:

Kyle Walker-Peters (4.5): Joined Southampton from Tottenham after he had a loan spell there last season when he moved in January after starting the season with three games with Tottenham but then fell out of favour and didn’t make the squad of 18. He moved to Southampton and became a regular starter. He scored only 32 points from 944 minutes providing only 1 assist but was involved in 2 cleansheets. He currently sits in just a touch over 9% of teams and all those coaches will be hoping he is Hasenhuttl’s first choice right back. He can easily get his coaches a score of 90 this season at 4.5m that is value.

Midfielders:

James Ward-Prowse (6.0): This guy at some point of last season he was in my team and then as soon as I got rid of him he started scoring more points, it’s always the case with any type of fantasy sports. He finished second behind Ings in the Southampton ranking of points with 117, he contributed 5 goals and 4 assists, in those 5 goals were a couple of lovely free kicks. He played every minute last season for the Saints and I expect him to do the same this season. There are a lot of value mids at 6.0 and Ward-Prowse is one who performs consistently and is a proven points scorer. Will definitely be one to keep on your radar or even start with, currently in only 4.0% of teams.

Nathan Redmond (6.5): If I’m being honest we didn’t see the best of him last season, but in saying that he did score his coaches 107 points from 2763 minutes contributing 4 goals and 4 assists, if Southampton are looking to get back to challenging for European football then he will stand up and will be one of southamptons top scorers. He can easily go back to season 2018/19 form where he scored 137 points and contributed 6 goals and 5 assists. For a 6.5m I reckon for his output he is too much as there are better 6.0m players even Ward-prowse who can get you more points saving you 0.5 and you can spend that 0.5 on someone else. Currently in 0.9% of teams.

Stuart Armstrong (5.5): moved from Celtic at the start of the 2018/19 season, which I believe was an awesome transfer for Southampton. He played 29 games in his first season coming off the bench 13 times and starting 16 times. He scored 3 goals during provided 2 assists. While last season he played 1706 minutes for a score of 98 points playing in 30 games while starting 19 of those games. In those 19 games he scored 5 goals and had 4 assists. He only played 9 full games. If he can break the 2200 minute barrier this season we could see him boost his score to 115 and his goal contributions to 12+. Currently in a touch over 2% of teams. 

Forwards:

Danny Ings (8.5): Missed out on the golden boot by a solitary goal. He scored 22 goals last season with 2 assists scoring 198 points from 2800 minutes. He improved his score by more than double and improved his goals by 15. He’s increased how much he is worth to 8.5m which is a lot for a player that was only 6.0m to start with last season. It would be between him and Jimenez in your team, definitely could break the 200 points this season, he can win the golden boot and if Southampton get back to competing for European football, Ings will be front and centre of that. 

Che Adams (6.0): He was involved in the squad 36 times, playing 30 times starting 12 times and being subbed in 18 times. He scored 78 points in FPL contributing 4 goals and 4 assists from only 1095 minutes. Can definitely improve to over 100 points and should be Danny Ings strike partner this season if Ralph Hasenhuttl plays a two prong attack. Definitely consider but it would be between him and mitrovic and you all know who I’d go.
