Sheffield United FPL Preview 2020/21

Sheffield performed over and beyond everyone’s expectations last season, they finished in 9th position and just missed out on European football. For a team that just came into the premier league and were in the European spots for most of the season is a massive achievement, Chris Wilder managed his teams so very well and if you are a blades fan you would of been very happy with the way last season was. This season I feel like Sheffield are a huge unknown will they stay up or will they do what they did last season, we really don’t know.

Last season Sheffield’s highest scorer in the premier league was Dean Henderson, but he was only on loan from Manchester United. He played every minute for Sheffield apart from the two games that Sheffield played Man Utd. Henderson scored 160 points, but now is back at United. Unfortunately Bournemouth got relegated but Sheffield were able to get Aaron Ramsdale from them to boost their goalkeeping ranks. Lundstram was Sheffields best out field player in regards to Fantasy scoring 144 points. Sheffield had 8 players score over 100 points last season and for Sheffield there main points came from keeping clean sheets, 7 of the 8 players were either goalkeeper or defenders who scored over 100 points, Lundstram last season was a defender but playing in midfield so he was a steal last season but unfortunately this season he is a midfielder so his value does drop a bit.

Sheffield’s opening 5 games are:

Wolves (H)

Aston Villa (A)

Leeds United (H)

Arsenal (A)

Fulham (H)

If the Sheffield of last season turns up they could possibly get 7 or 9 points out of their first 5 games. They can possibly keep a few clean sheets against the newly promoted teams, so you could possibly choose one of the defenders from Sheffield, but also last season Sheffield’s strikers only scored 6 goals each and Sheffield only scored 39 goals and conceded only 39 goals too.

Goalkeeper:

Aaron Ramsdale (5.0): Was Bournemouth’s number 1 between the sticks last season but they got relegated and Sheffield bought him since Henderson returned back to United from his loan. Last season for Bournemouth Ramsdale scored 126 points keeping 5 cleans sheets and pulling off 128 saves. Definitely considering him as my starting keeper.

Currently in 7.5% of teams.

Defenders:

George Baldock (5.5): Another one of Sheffield’s defenders that can provide you with some value this season, if they perform the same as last season, as mentioned numerous times. Scored the same amount of points as Enda Stevens with 142 points but he played every single minute of last season. Baldock also contributed the exact same stats as Stevens with 2 goals and 4 assists, while also being involved in the Blades 13 clean sheets. He’s in 5.8% of teams currently and I reckon that will be above 6.5% before the season starts.

John Egan (5.0): Currently in 17.4% of teams and for a good reason too, if Sheffield do what they did last season and keep plenty of cleansheets then having one or two Sheffield United defenders will be the way to go. Last season Egan scored 133 points from 3187 minutes. He scored 2 goals and contributed 1 assist while being involved in 13 cleansheets. 13 clean sheets for a team that has just been promoted is a pretty good record. He is one of the cheaper options in defence and is a proven scorer compared to the other 5.0m players. Definitely on my radar even though I believe Sheffield are a huge unknown.

Enda Stevens (5.5): Only two points behind Lundstram with 142 points. He is currently in 6.0% of teams. In those 142 points last season he played 3345 minutes contributing 2 goals and 4 assists while being involved in 13 clean sheets. He is a little more expensive than John Egan which might put people off him but still any of the Blades defence would be valuable in your team if they produce what they did last season.

Midfielders:

John Lundstram (5.5): Was a defender last season playing in the midfield and boy was he great. He was one of the biggest steals along with de Bruyne starting at 9.5m last year. Lunsdstram scored 144 points last season contributing 5 goals and 4 assists while being involved in 10 clean sheets. He was one of the first names on Chris Wilder’s team sheet until January when they bought in Sander Berge and Lundstram started games on the bench or was subbed before the 60th minute. This season he is midfielder so I don’t believe he is as much value as he was last season. He is currently in 13.3% of teams, will he produce what he did last season? Only time will tell.

Sander Berge (5.0): Came to Sheffield in January transfer window from Genk in Belgium. He was involved in 14 games playing 943 minutes scoring 1 goal and providing 1 assist. If he can somehow find his way into the team alongside Lundstram then these two defensive midfielders will provide fantasy coaches with some very valuable points. I do see Sander Berge getting close to that 100 points mark this season. He is currently 0.5% of teams.

Forwards:

Lys Mousset (6.0): Mousset only played just a touch over 1200 minutes scoring 84 points contributing 6 goals and 4 assists. If he plays over 2400 minutes then he should easily get 120 points, hopefully he is Wilder’s First choice striker. Just keep him in your watch list, he is currently in 0.6% of teams.

This season for the Blades in my opinion could definitely be like last season where they become very stingy in regards to conceding goals and being able to hold teams to either one goal or keep clean sheets. In regards to that then if you’re looking for a defender you could pick anyone from Sheffields defence, as the saying goes you could throw a blanket over them. Apart from that we don’t know who Chris Wilder will have as his first choice number 9 and we also don’t know if we will see Sander Berge and Lundstram in the same team, let’s hope we get both in the same team to start the season and then we might see coaches have 3 Sheffield players in their teams again. Ramsdale is a good shout to be your keeper but make sure you have another keeper on your bench for when Sheffield play the big boys so you can rotate through even though last season Sheffield only conceded a goal a game it might be very different this season. Make sure you also have a couple of your watch list too.
