Aston Villa Fantasy Premier League Preview 2020/21

Before football restarted in June after the three month break for coronavirus I wasn’t expecting to be writing this for this team. They surprised everyone and somehow got out of jail and stayed up thanks to a 1-1 draw to West Ham on the final day of the season. If Jack Grealish leaves his boyhood club they go down, actually we will probably find them in the championship next season 2021/22. In regards to Fantasy Premier League there really weren’t any standout players apart from the fore mentioned Jack Grealish. He was the shining light for FPL players from the Villa. 


Villa will have no game in Gameweek 1 due to City finishing their season later than most other teams due to champions league commitments. Villa will have at least one double Gameweek this season due to their game against City being rescheduled. They do face Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal in their first 10 games of the season, they also face two of the promoted teams in Leeds and Fulham which I do see them winning. 


First 5 games for Villa: 

Sheffield (H)

Fulham (A)

Liverpool (H)

Leicester (A)

Leeds (H)


Aston Villa’s top scorer this season will probably be Jack Grealish again unless he moves to another club, he is rumoured to join Manchester United but that won’t happen. John McGinn and Conor Hourihane should be behind him if not score more than him. If you’re looking for a cheap player to ride your bench I’d look at Ørjan Nyland as a back up keeper or Keinan Davis as a back up striker. Anwar El Ghazi and Wesley Moraes are the penalty takers for Villa. If Villa stay up Grealish has to produce the same as he did last season and have a couple of mates to help him like John McGinn, Wesley and Conor Hourihane.


Goalkeepers:


Tom Heaton (4.5): At this price he is a steal as he was one of the top keepers a few seasons ago. We should see him be the starting keeper for Villa once he has recovered from his knee injury he 

suffered last season. When he was playing for Burnley back in 2016/17 he finished with 150 points. He won’t hit that this season but depending when he’s back he can definitely sit on your bench and use him when your starting keeper has unfavourable fixture.


Ørjan Nyland (4.0): Unless Villa get another keeper he will be the number 1 between the sticks for a while till Heaton has recovered from injury. Last season in the premier league he kept one clean sheet versus Sheffield. He sat on the bench as backup for Pepe Reina who was on loan at Villa till the end of last season. At 4.0m for a starting keeper I would definitely have him on your bench and use the extra 0.5 somewhere else. 



Defenders:


Matt Targett (4.5): Last season he made a transition from Southampton where he wasn’t finding many minutes to Villa where was their main LB. He provided his FPL coaches with one goal, two assists and five clean sheets. We should see him improve on his 80 point output this season. He will be the starting LB for Villa and if you needed to, he could easily find a spot on your bench. Villa didn’t keep that many clean sheets last season and will they have a repeat of last season I believe so. He is definitely one to watch and keep an eye on at a very tasty price.


Tyrone Mings (5.0): He finished the season at 4.4m which saw him increase to 5.0m in FPL, I believe is too much and there are better defenders at 5m with better scoring potential. Last season he played 2900 minutes for an output of 90 points which consisted of 2 goals and 2 assists with 6 clean sheets. He does provide an aerial threat at corners. He would be in my pool of players if was 4.5 but at 5.0 I just can’t justify paying that for him. 



Midfielders: 


Jack Grealish (7.0): The Saving Grace or Boyhood Hero, Grealish can be called anything you want, he single handedly kept Villa up last season. He started last season at 6.0m and finished at 5.9m, I got him towards the end of the season when he was a steal at 5.7m. He was at the core of everything at Villa. The team always were looking for him coming forward, he is a quality player and 7.0m is quite a lot for him but he will improve on his score of 149 it might not be by much but maybe about 20 points. That does justify his price of 7.0m. He produced 8 goals and 7 assists, he should definitely produce close to 20 goal contributions this season. Unfortunately Villa chopped and changed their midfield throughout last season but that shouldn’t be the case this season. 


John McGinn (5.5): He missed out on 10 games last season due to an ankle injury, if fully fit should definitely see him push 110 points this season and that’s a steal at 5.5m. He definitely links up well with Jack Grealish and provided the assist for the goal that kept Villa up. He produced 3 goals and 3 assists and should see that increase to at least 5 assists and 5 goals this season. 


Conor Hourihane (6.0): If you’re looking for a Player of differential from Villa that other managers will not have this guy could potentially be in your squad. He played 28 games and started 18 games and came off the bench in 9 of the 28 games. He provided 5 assists and contributed 3 goals for a total of 83 points. If he is able cement a spot in the midfield then should be considered, he is on most set pieces and is a quality player.


Trezeguet (5.5): Scored probably one of the most important goals for Villa against Arsenal. For his first season in the premier league, he did alright scoring 98 points contributing 6 goals and 2 assists. Should reach at least 10 goal contributions this season. 



Forwards:


Mbwana Samatta (6.0): Same as Davis, came in about halfway through the season from Brugge, since arriving at Aston Villa he started every game apart from Watford in January. Villa didn’t score many goals last season and Samatta scored 1 in 14 games. With Wesley out for a period of time with a knee injury we should see Samatta start most of the games. I believe there are better strikers from other teams with better scoring potential but definitely one to watch. 


Keinan Davis (4.5): Came in halfway through last season, was mainly used as a sub and started a few matches, will probably either go out on loan to gain experience or be used as a sub. Possibly a potential bench option but wouldn’t be starting with Keinan this season, Samatta well ahead of him and when Wesley is back he will drop to third in the running for Villa’s striker. Definitely in my player pool and one to watch, still hasn’t recorded a premier league goal yet but has created lots of chances for himself, should see him do it this season. 


This season in FPL make sure you do have some Villa players on your radar for their double gameweek. Hourihane, McGinn and Grealish could possibly be in your starting eleven for game week 2. I’d have Nyland and Davis possibly in contention for a bench spot. Just remember no Villa player will score you points in the first game week.

The less said and mentioned about Gameweek 6 the better. My team was exactly like Aston Villa on the weekend, thought we were cruising nicely and continually improving, but nope, came crashing back down to earth. Gameweek 9

Two weeks without anything from me and my rank has dropped 800,000 spots, don’t even ask why and what’s happened, I really don’t know. It’s been a difficult season so far for everyone. Liverpool sitting pretty at the moment and possibly are on track to win the league but Tottenham and Leicester are on track too. In my opinion INTERNATIONAL BREAK should never of happened. Too many players now have coronavirus, getting injured and are playing too many games. FIFA need to think of player welfare before trying to make some money. Fans will always have football. FIFA just needed to take into account that players never really had an off-season, players from big clubs are playing nearly every 3-4 days. Jurgen Klopp made a valid point after the draw with Man City, clubs are getting too many injuries and not enough turnaround time between games due to all these condensed games. Gameweek 5 review

If I was David Coote I wouldn’t be wanting to step foot on the red side of Merseyside for a long time. Seriously how can a referee forget the rules!!! The Merseyside derby had everything 4 goals, a red card, VAR drama and we still couldn’t get a winner, but honestly what was going on in the VAR room? Pickford that honestly was the most disgraceful tackle I’ve ever seen. I honestly believe Liverpool were robbed of winning that derby, at least Everton still can’t beat us, it’s been a long time for them.
